Podcast and interview recording

Calm conversation, clear voices and an engineer watching levels—so you are not juggling software while trying to listen.

Two podcast hosts with microphones and headphones at table

Home recordings often sound uneven when everyone shares one USB mic. At Nelkenshift on Govert Flinckstraat 142 in Amsterdam we put two to four speakers on separate channels, with headphones and a mix that keeps everyone intelligible to themselves. The room is treated; you should not hear the space talking back.

The service fits interview shows, conversation podcasts, internal Q&A recordings, trailers and spoken-word projects that need a cleaner capture than a video call, without hiring a full post house upfront. After the session you get multitrack files and a working export for your edit; heavy sound design is outside the standard fee. Solo voice-over with music is often better served by vocal and speech recording.

Process

  1. 01

    Book

Through contact send date, speaker count, duration and format. We confirm hourly or session rate and send practical tips.

  2. 02

    Setup

Microphones on boom or stand, pop filters, headphones and level check. Ten to twenty minutes before the first word.

  3. 03

    Record

Conversation in one or several segments. Engineer flags takes and watches plosives, overlap and room noise.

  4. 04

    Wrap

Basic edit (trim silences, clean starts), export per voice and a stereo mixdown for quick review.

Who this is for

Hosts launching a new show, journalists with guests, teams making an internal podcast, and creators who want a trailer or bonus episode captured in one block. Also suited to panel talks with up to four people at the table, each on a dedicated mic.

Minimum age 16 to book independently; younger participants are welcome with an adult present. We do not record live audience in the same room—the focus is controlled dialogue.

Room and layout

We use a treated recording space (booth about 8 m² plus adjacent areas in the building with 3 rooms in total). For two hosts we use a table setup with dynamic or condenser mics depending on voice and noise. For three or four speakers we arrange chairs and stands so nobody speaks into someone else’s capsule.

In the control room (about 14 m²) the engineer watches meters and records multitrack. Guests may sit in the control room when space allows; the conversation itself stays in the recording area for best acoustics.

Monitoring and flow

Each speaker gets a headphone mix with their own voice and the others balanced. You hear immediately if you are too far from the mic or speaking too quietly. The engineer can suggest a short pause for water or a false start—without over-directing the conversation.

Remote guests over the internet are possible if you handle software and routing; we record locals in the room. Sync and cleanup of the remote track are your edit unless we agree an extension upfront.

What to prepare

  • Outline or question list (paper or tablet is fine)
  • Participant names for file labels
  • Estimated duration and segments (intro, blocks, outro)
  • House rules: phones off, avoid jangly jewellery, no rattling cups near mics

Speak clearly and let people finish; overlap can be fixed in edit but costs time. Voice care tips are in our vocal warm-up guide—useful for long takes.

Basic edit and delivery

After the session we usually deliver within a few business days:

  • Multitrack WAV per speaker, 24 bit, 48 kHz
  • Stereo rough mix for a quick phone or laptop check
  • Markers or notes on obvious bad takes when time allows

Basic edit means trimming long silence at head and tail—not full broadcast assembly, no music, no jingles and no heavy noise reduction on traffic already on the recording. Deep restoration is a separate job.

Files stay available via download link for 24 months; then we delete according to our retention policy in privacy policy.

FAQ

How many speakers at once?

Two to four on dedicated mics. More than four needs a custom setup—ask ahead via contact.

Is the three-hour session pure recording time?

The session price covers up to three studio hours including setup and basic edit. Talk time is usually about two to two-and-a-half hours—plan your outline accordingly.

Do you deliver a finished podcast?

No. We deliver clean tracks and a rough mix; assembly, music and publishing are yours or your editor’s. Mixing can help for a final mix.

Can we eat or drink in the studio?

Water in a stable glass away from mics is fine. Skip crinkly packaging or ice during takes—it ends up on the recording.

Can I book a trial session?

Yes—a short block at €85 hourly is a good way to test the room and workflow before committing to a series.
